Compliance & Safety - Why it Matters.
The First Step in Choosing a Motorised Blind, Curtain, or Awning Motor is Ensuring It’s Compliant & Safe.
Let’s dive into what you need to know to make a smart, safe, and compliant purchase.
How to Identify a Safe & Compliant Motorised Product
The Regulatory Compliance Mark (RCM) is the official certification that confirms a product meets Australian electrical safety and radio frequency (RF) standards. If a motor, remote, or hub does not have an RCM mark, it is illegal to sell, install, or use in Australia.

Disclaimer:
The RCM logo shown here is for educational purposes only to help consumers identify compliant products. Always check that a product displays the RCM mark and is registered by a Responsible Supplier in the EESS database before purchasing.
1. Look for the RCM (Regulatory Compliance Mark)
The RCM mark confirms that a product meets Australian electrical safety and radio frequency (RF) standards. If a motor, remote, or hub does not have an RCM mark, it is illegal to sell or install in Australia.
TIP: Before purchasing, check for the RCM logo on the product or its packaging.
Check the EESS Database
All electrical products that connect to mains power (240V) must be listed in the Electrical Equipment Safety System (EESS) database.
To verify compliance, visit the EESS database homepage and conduct a ‘Public Search’ for the supplier’s name. Ensure they are listed as a Responsible Supplier and that their products are registered.
TIP: If a supplier is not listed in the database, their products may not meet Australian compliance standards.
3. Beware of False Compliance Claims
Some manufacturers falsely claim compliance by displaying:
-
Only a CE mark – This is a European standard and does not meet Australian regulations.
-
No visible compliance label – If a product lacks an RCM mark, it cannot be legally sold in Australia.
TIP: If a seller cannot provide proof of compliance, do not buy the product.
Why Compliance Should Be Your First Priority
When buying motorised blinds, curtains, or awnings, it’s easy to focus on price and features, but one of the most important steps is making sure the product is safe, legal, and compliant with Australian standards.
What Happens If You Buy a Non-Compliant Product?
Many consumers unknowingly purchase non compliant motors, assuming they are safe. However, choosing the wrong product can have serious consequences.

It May Be Illegal to Sell, Install, or Use in Australia
-
Electrical products must meet strict Australian safety laws.
-
If a product doesn’t have the correct certification, it should not be legally sold or installed.
-
Retailers and installers selling non-compliant products could face penalties, recalls, or legal action.
Fire & Electrical Safety Hazards
-
Cheap, unregulated motors can overheat, short circuit, or fail prematurely.
-
Many manufacturers produce motors that do not meet Australian safety laws, yet these products are still distributed and sold by suppliers in Australia.
-
A faulty or unregulated motor could cause electrical fires, putting your home and family at risk.
Insurance Risks – Your Cover Could Be Voided
-
Home insurance policies require all electrical products to meet Australian safety standards.
-
If a non compliant motor causes a fire, your insurance provider may refuse to cover damages.
-
Many insurers explicitly exclude non-certified electrical products from claims.
